Everywhere we turn in December bright lights dazzle our senses and take charge of our lives. Food, music, and gift-giving unravels our normal schedule and plays havoc with those ordinary things we need to get done. Takeaway all of the yuletide trimming, feast, and song, there is one truth that is undeniable—the holidays remind us to connect with those whom we love.

America has a long history of scattering ashes and burying bodies in hallowed soil everywhere, and even beyond our own land. The Normandy American Cemetery is where thousands of white Christian crosses, Jewish stars of david, and Islamic five-pointed stars mark the graves of our soldiers who died on French soil during World War II.Many other cemeteries scattered around our own nation are full of weather beaten headstones, stained by tall grass and choked with weeds. The grave markers are like pearls that have long ago lost their luster and, yet, are as pure as the tears shed by those who once loved these fallen soldiers.

Most Americans are compassionate and caring people who want to build better lives for themselves, their children, and their communities. We are enriched by working together to achieve goals that benefit the common good. Regardless of our political affiliation—blue vs. red, conservatives vs. liberals, or republicans vs. democrats, we believe in our core democratic principles. We believe we have more in common that is good and true. The issues that divide us are less important. It’s like Benjamin Franklin said, “We can choose to hang together, or we will all hang separately.”
