The State of Sexual Violence in America - One Woman's Story. Anna Faktorovich writes about her own experiences with sexual assault within the larger context of what is taking place in the national landscape.
Carl Sagan said, "Anything else you’re interested in is not going to happen if you can’t breathe the air and drink the water. Don’t sit this one out. Do something." And that is exactly what a group of citizens and city employees who cared about a sustainable and green environment in Steamboat Springs, Colorado did in 2005 when they started an independent group called Green team.
When the U.S. Constitution was adopted in 1789, it was meant to be a means by which the states ascribed powers to the federal government, but its first ten amendments -- the Bill of Rights -- defined limits on the federal government to enumerate constitutional protection for individual liberties. The principle of representation was an intensely argued one when the Constitution was drafted, most particularly in how slaves would be counted (as three-fifths of a person) in a federal census every ten years. In her book, These Truths, Jill Lepore notes “The most remarkable consequence of this remarkable arrangement was to grant slave states far greater representation in Congress than free states.” (125)
For more than a century, the town of Centralia in southwestern Washington has largely depended on extractive industries for its economy. Logging and coal mining typically provided jobs that paid pretty well. But the forestry industry took a big hit back in 1981 when Mt. St. Helens erupted, and then the coal mine just outside of town closed in 2006.
Greenpop takes green seriously. In fact, Greenpop personifies Green Mind, Green living Green doing. It all started when founder and TreeEO Misha Teasdale, after returning from his travels, wanted to contribute to sustaining the environment. He along with 9 friends had a goal to plant a 1000 trees during September in the under greened townships of Cape Town.
“Wisdom”. The very word inspires awe. It suggests pronouncements from the Oracle on Mount Olympus, or the stone tablets that Moses (purportedly) brought down from Mount Sinai, or the Analectsof Confucius, or Plato’s Republic, or the sayings of Mark Twain and Yogi Berra. I prefer to call it a distillation of seasoned experience by some of the battle-hardened veterans of the vicissitudes of life– people with a good heart who have served their time on the battlefield and want to pass on to others what they have learned about the art of living, and of politics.
The key to understanding people and the world around us begins with education. One way to learn about the world is by developing a love of books. Each month, we profile a library. Large, small, urban, rural, post-modern, quaint or neo-classic; do you have a library that you love? Tell us about it. This month, Patricia Vaccarino lets the spotlight shine on the newest addition to the King County Library System—the Tukwila Library—which serves as a gateway to the South King County region in Washington state.
