In their excitement to launch their new ventures, many entrepreneurs tend to minimize the level of risk involved with their startup. But for funders and investors, new-venture risk assessment is a critical part of the evaluation and decision-making processes. In my work with entrepreneurs seeking funding for their startups or early-stage ventures, I generally find that most have not adequately factored risk into their plans. However, from both a funding and an operational perspective, it is important to not just identify the risks, but to consider how they will be overcome or minimized.

Maurice Leary | In His Own Words

Growing up, my five siblings and I didn't have much. We were homeless for an extended period of time. Living in an apartment building with no basic necessities, no water, food, clean clothing, and shoes. The hard floor was our bed, but we slept in the seated position most of the time.  


Keeping up with Step-it-up Camp

It’s been well over a year now since Fashion Designer and Entrepreneur Monir Zandghoreishi joined her son-in-law Maurice Leary to expand Step-It-Up Camp. At first, Step-It-Up Camp was the brain child of  Monir Zandghoreishi's son-in-law Maurice Leary to provide after-school athletics to high risk students. Maurice started out with 16 kids to help them develop their skills and to stay out of trouble. Maurice himself had experienced a hardscrabble past. He was born and raised in New Rochelle, New York and knew one way to get kids on the right path was by mentoring them and giving them another road map to grow stronger and more resilient every day.

From Wyoming: Country Burgers!

Traveling two hours south of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, the speed limit is 80 and it doesn’t feel right unless you’re cruising at 90 mph. Occasionally, traffic slows to let a herd of antelope safely cross the road. Going South on US 191 through rural Wyoming, a makeshift road sign Café gets attention because there isn’t anything else out here. The Café billboard points the way to a long white trailer-style building named Country Burgers.


Step-It-Up Camp | The Language of Sewing

Following an international career in Persia and Vienna, Austria, Monir Zandghoreishi  (pronounced Mo-Neer  Zang-or-eh-shee) moved to Seattle in 1987. As a highly respected and talented couture designer, she specialized in creating gowns for women for their weddings gala events. Later, she became Dean of Fashion for for the International Academy of Design and Technology (Academy - Seattle), which was later renamed Sanford- Brown College. Monir Zandghoreishi’s innate flair for fashion, coupled with bold pragmatism, has always driven her to conquer new frontiers.  As of late, she has undertaken a new after- school program with Step-It-Up Camp designed to teach young people to sew.
