Book Review: Braiding Sweetgrass

Braiding Sweetgrass is the ultimate meditation on stewardship, defining what is prayerful and actionable, as well as giving us the lessons we need to take care of ourselves and the world around us. In the Apache lexicon, the root word for land is the same as mind. I believe that this book will expand your mind as though it is a great and mysterious land yearning to be explored. The author describes Lionel, who takes only what he needs to give back in reciprocity for what he takes, to nurture the world that nurtures him. Lionel’s profound generosity is a metaphor for what it takes to live a contemplative life that is powerful, prayerful and the essence of fulfillment—filling our desire to be one of this earth and one with humanity. A beautiful fusion of the indigenous wisdom that embraces the glory of life in all of its incarnations, scientific knowledge is fused together with the innate understanding of the teaching of plants. The plants teach us all we should ever need to know. This beautifully written work is a heartfelt feast for the mind and soul.
