Preparing for Re-Entry the Native Way

“We are all related to or know somebody in prison,” says Gabe Galanda, attorney and Native American activist. This is especially likely to be true for Native Americans, who are significantly over-represented in the prison system in several states, according to the Prison Policy Initiative. The Department of Justice reports that Native Americans are “under jurisdiction of the criminal justice system” at over twice the per capita rate of whites.


GOOD LAWYERS

A few weeks ago, we sent an email to our list, titled Know a Good Lawyer?  We received some amazing responses and some terrible responses too. It was astonishing how many P.R. people couldn’t write three good sentences that answered the question: Why do you think your nominee is a good lawyer? One reader said there was no such thing as a good lawyer! Without explanation, and without apology, some lawyers nominated themselves. Some lawyers didn’t have a link to their bios, and many failed to read the instructions! Imagine how they review complex contract negotiations. Ha! We did get some good submissions and found that there are indeed lawyers out there who are making the world a good place to live!  I hope you enjoy this round-up. Happy Law Day!

 


May 1st is Law Day

It was President Eisenhower who proclaimed May 1 to be Law Day in the United States. The observance of Law Day was later codified as Public Law 87-20 on April 7, 1961.  We think May 1 is a great day to say thanks to the lawyers who are doing good work. Throughout May, we will be sharing news stories about lawyers who are practicing Good Law and making a difference in the world.
